Whether you are studying GCSE maths, preparing for an A-level biology exam, or returning to studies after a long time, my first goal in science and maths tutoring is to boost your confidence and make the path clearer for you.
“We can always make complex ideas clearer…”
I offer tutoring in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology (and combined science) at GCSE; and I specialize in A-level Biology tutoring. I offer one-to-one tutoring and small group masterclass sessions. Find out more about our services and fees.
Previous clients have warmed to the approach of putting you and your needs first (see the testimonials page). With a PhD in Biology and Mathematics, and over 10 years’ experience in cancer and mathematics research, I offer an unique and – hopefully – exciting perspective! I also offer support with critical thinking at all ages from GCSE to postgraduate students and help with the A-level Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Evaluating sources of information is an important life skill, but increasingly important in science too.
While every student has different needs, a typical session might involve:
Reviewing any topics you find challenging – really exploring new ways to relate to topics.
Possibly hopping between two or three sciences to “troubleshoot” what you’ve covered in school this week.
Recapping topics you may have covered in recent lessons in school or college.
Focussing on how to apply your knowledge to exam questions. Learning some tips for exam technique.
With A-level science specifically, putting topics into a wider context, such as research or medicine, often helps students to recall information.
In-between sessions I welcome questions via Skype.
Help with revision techniques – our study guide for how to revise GCSE sciences might help too 🙂
Alongside science and maths tutoring I am an award-winning science writer. I have a wealth of experience in science communication and editing undergraduate and postgraduate essays and reports. I am very good at making seemingly complex ideas clearer and more accessible.
While tutoring is a big part of what I do (I really enjoy helping clients of all ages to understand tricky concepts), the mentoring side of my job is just as rewarding. Helping people to become more confident, and sometimes even to have fun!
I also have extensive experience of helping students on the autistic spectrum and those with anxiety. I have taken several home-educated students through IGCSE, GCSE and A-level. I’ve written on home educating your child through IGCSE for the home education charity ‘Education Otherwise‘.
It’s also always a privilege to help adult learners, who may be returning to studies after a while away. I’ve taken many learners through their functional skills level 2 maths qualification. Facing fears about maths or science takes a lot of courage, and is perfectly normal. I’m experienced in helping with maths anxiety. But you don’t need to do it alone and I want to help you on your journey.
My sessions are relaxed, informal and focussed. All our tutees have free access to our ‘Ask an expert‘ service for help and support in-between sessions.
